If you search the internet for terms such as “pain-free dentist near me,” know that you’re not alone. Millions of people suffer from various degrees of dental anxiety, a condition that often leads to neglecting oral health. This is why here at Walton Family Dentistry, Dr. Michael Walton and his team work hard to provide the best treatment options and a relaxing atmosphere to help ease dental anxiety.
Not all patients share the same level of anxiety, which is why we offer various treatments to accommodate patients with both light and mild anxiety and those suffering from more severe anxiety. Treatment options such as “laughing gas” and oral conscious sedation are proven therapies to help ease anxiety.
Most of us are familiar with laughing gas from movies and tv shows. However, it’s not quite what you may think. Laughing gas is a mild sedative administered to patients using a comfortable mask worn over the nose. Dr. Walton adjusts the gas flow to ensure you are getting the needed amount to help you remain relaxed and calm throughout the entire procedure. Patients who use laughing gas report feeling euphoria, and you’ll likely remain fully awake and aware during the procedure.
Laughing gas takes effect almost instantly, keeping you feeling relaxed and happy during your procedure. Plus, the effects of the gas wear off a few minutes after your procedure, meaning you can enjoy the remainder of your day freely without limitations after leaving the office.
A stronger form of sedation is oral conscious sedation, which comes as a pill and is taken orally. Dr. Walton usually prescribes medication such as Valium or Halcion to ensure you feel relaxed, safe, and comfortable throughout your treatment. This form of sedation represents a deeper level than laughing gas.
After around 30 to 60 minutes of taking oral conscious sedation, you might feel drowsy. However, you will remain aware and responsive to your surroundings.
When preparing for oral conscious sedation, it’s best not to eat or drink for a few hours before your appointment. This way, you can ensure that your medication is not influenced by digesting food or drink.
Also, unlike laughing gas, you will not be able to carry out your regular daily routines after using oral conscious sedation. The after-effects last much longer and are much stronger. This also means you shouldn’t drive or operate heavy machinery. We require having another person accompany you or having them pick you up.
