Enjoy Painless Dentistry with Oral Conscious Sedation

At Walton Family Dentistry, we are excited to offer sedation dentistry solutions for patients to ensure a painless and comfortable experience with our team. Dr. Michael Walton can help patients feel at ease with the use of sedation. One of the most common and popular options for sedation is oral conscious sedation, and his Bardstown, Kentucky, area team can educate you on what you can expect at your next appointment with oral conscious sedation in place.

What is Oral Conscious Sedation?

Dr. Michael Walton describes oral conscious sedation as the use of sedation medication, either diazepam or triazolam, to reduce anxiety and to increase your level of comfort during dental procedures.  Medications are taken at home about an hour before the appointment.  By the time the patient arrives, they are relaxed and coherent enough to follow instructions, answer questions, and be engaged with their dentist during their visit. After the appointment, the patient will have a little or no memory of the appointment, and their dental work will be complete!  Patients wanting oral conscious sedation must be evaluated and determined to be medically stable.  Transportation to and from the appointment is required.

Who is a Good Candidate for Oral Conscious Sedation?

The best candidates for oral conscious sedation are patients who have moderate to severe anxieties when visiting the dentist. Patients will find that they will have a better experience in the dental chair and are more likely to attend their appointments than someone with higher anxiety and no sedation methods.

Is Oral Conscious Sedation Safe?

Absolutely! We find that integrating sedation into dental appointments for those with anxiety makes them more relaxed and begin to have a positive connection with their dental team—instead of a fearful one!

Are There Other Sedation Techniques Used at Walton Family Dentistry?

Dr. Michael Walton is pleased to also provide laughing gas or nitrous oxide sedation. This sedation method is better for those with mild anxieties or those with specific issues such as a sensitive gag reflex. This type of sedation is administered in the dental office via a mask over the nose. It provides almost immediate relaxation, making some patients giddy and others sleepy. The dental work is completed, and then the patient is administered oxygen to reverse the effects of the nitrous oxide. The primary benefit of this sedation method is that patients do not need to arrange transportation as they can return to their day without any recovery.
